Camille Monet on a Garden Bench (Camille Monet sur un Banc de Jardin), painted by Claude Monet in 1873 shows the painter’s first wife, Camille Doncieux, seated on a park bench in the garden of the family’s rented house at Argenteuil, a gentleman in a top hat resting against the bench beside her and a parasol-carrying figure strolling the path behind. Rendered in the warm, dappled light of Monet’s mid-1870s domestic figure paintings, the canvas surrounds Camille with beds of autumn-red and orange flowers set down in the same loose, broken brushwork the painter was developing for his outdoor landscapes. The intimate garden setting reflects the settled family life Monet enjoyed at Argenteuil in the years just before the first Impressionist exhibition.
