The Buffet, painted by Paul Cézanne in 1877, arranges a country sideboard’s shelf of cups, saucers, and a stoneware jug above a rumpled white cloth spread with apples, a dark wine bottle, a blue-tinted glass, and a stacked plate of wafer biscuits. Cézanne composed the work during his formative Post-Impressionist years, when he began treating ordinary kitchen objects as exercises in structural balance rather than anecdotal genre painting. The tilted perspective of the tabletop and the deliberate stacking of forms anticipate the more radical spatial experiments of his later still lifes.
