Painted in October 1888 during Van Gogh's intensely productive months in Arles, Bridge of Trinquetaille captures the iron staircase and span of the Rhône crossing that linked Arles to its western bank. The composition unfolds in cool slate blues, weathered stone greys, and pale Provençal sky, animated by the steep diagonal of the steps and small figures climbing toward the bridge. Van Gogh painted the bridge several times that autumn, drawn to its severe modern geometry against the soft Mediterranean light.
