The Bridge at Argenteuil on a Gray Day (Le Pont d’Argenteuil, Temps Gris), painted by Claude Monet in 1876 depicts the road bridge spanning the Seine at Argenteuil beneath a heavy, overcast sky, with small sailboats and rowboats gathered near a mustard-yellow boathouse moored at the base of the bridge’s pilings. It is one of several canvases in which Monet returned to this same crossing under differing conditions of weather and light, an investigation of a single motif that anticipated the great serial paintings, such as the Haystacks and Rouen Cathedral, he would undertake in the following decade. The subdued gray-toned palette contrasts with Monet’s brighter, sunlit views of the same bridge, showing the range of atmospheric effects he pursued at Argenteuil.
