Boys in a Dory, by Winslow Homer depicts a group of boys in straw hats seated in a weathered rowboat, one perched on the bow with bare feet dangling above the water, as pale-sailed schooners drift across the calm, hazy harbor behind them. Homer (1836-1910), the American painter celebrated for his unsentimental scenes of everyday life and the sea, made this watercolor during the summer of 1873 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and the original is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Artist: Winslow Homer, 1836-1910. Date: c. 1873.
