The Bombardment of Algiers by Lord Exmouth in 1816, by George Chambers depicts the decisive Anglo-Dutch naval assault on the Algerine fortifications, rendered in the fine detail of a historical engraving with warships engaged amid smoke, cannon fire, and turbulent harbor waters. George Chambers, an English marine painter born in Whitby in 1803, was celebrated for his dramatic naval and maritime scenes and was commissioned to paint this very subject for the Naval Gallery at Greenwich Hospital.
