Boats on the Beach at Étretat, painted by Claude Monet in 1885, revisits the same stretch of Normandy shoreline the artist had painted two years earlier, showing small fishing dinghies drawn up on the beach beneath the chalk cliffs above Étretat. By 1885 Monet had settled at Giverny and was painting with the looser, more atmospheric brushwork that would carry him into the great series paintings of the following decade. The canvas captures the boats, the rocks, and the pale Channel light with the freely handled touch of his fully mature Impressionist style.
Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1885.
