Boats on the Beach at Étretat, painted by Claude Monet in 1883, shows some twenty fishing boats lined up on the pebbled shore beneath the towering white cliffs of Étretat’s Normandy coastline. Monet made this trip alone during the winter off-season, working in the cold, clear light to study the boats, the rock formations, and the wide Channel sky in a single unified composition. The painting is counted among the artist’s most celebrated Étretat canvases and today belongs to the Fondation Bemberg in Toulouse.
Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1883.
