Boats on the Beach at Étretat, painted by Claude Monet in 1885, depicts a row of retired fishing boats, known locally as caloges, drawn up on the shingle beach and converted into tarred plank storage huts beside a stone harbor building. Monet worked this scene from his room at the Hôtel Blanquet during a stormy off-season stay, focusing on the working life of the harbor rather than the town’s famous chalk cliffs and sea arches. Painted in thick, vigorous brushwork with touches of cadmium yellow and vermilion against cool blues and greens, the canvas is now held in the Art Institute of Chicago’s Worcester Collection.
