Batavier Line, Rotterdam-London, by Bart van der Leck is a poster design for the Wm. H. Müller & Co. steamship Batavier IV, framed in bold red typography and flattened, geometric figures of dockworkers and passengers. Van der Leck (1876–1958), a Dutch painter who would go on to help found the De Stijl movement, was commissioned by the shipping firm in 1914 to design advertising for its Rotterdam-London passenger and freight line, and this poster is an early showcase of the flat color planes and simplified forms that would define his later work.
Artist: Bart van der Leck (1876–1958). Date: c. 1914.
