The Basin at Argenteuil, painted by Claude Monet around 1872, looks along the tree-lined promenade at Argenteuil toward the basin crowded with sailboats, their white sails set against the bridge and rooftops of the town beyond. Strolling figures animate the riverside path in the left foreground, while Monet’s fragmented brushwork captures the flicker of light across water and canvas alike. Painted soon after Monet’s arrival in Argenteuil in December 1871, the canvas stands among the earliest and most accomplished works of the Argenteuil period, when Impressionism reached one of its defining peaks.
