Avenue of Plane Trees Near Arles Station, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, depicts a receding row of bare-branched plane trees lining the road toward the railway station at Arles, with a dark blue train passing behind the trunks, the detail that gave the work its familiar nickname, Le Train Bleu. Van Gogh built the composition around strong diagonal perspective lines, a device he had studied closely in Japanese woodblock prints, rendering the trunks in thick, twisting strokes of ochre and yellow against a pale winter sky. Painted during his prolific first months in Arles, the canvas shows his growing confidence with structural, perspective-driven landscape composition.
