Small Houses at Auvers, painted by Paul Cézanne in 1873-74, looks across a cluster of modest whitewashed dwellings half-hidden behind dense foliage, with the terraced hillsides of Auvers-sur-Oise rising in structured bands of green and ochre behind. Painted while Cézanne was working closely alongside Camille Pissarro in the villages north of Paris, the canvas shows him trading his earlier, more turbulent brushwork for a calmer, more analytical approach to landscape, breaking the hillside into deliberate, patterned strokes. The village of Auvers-sur-Oise, where Cézanne lived on and off through the mid-1870s, became one of the essential proving grounds for his mature style.
