Autumn on the Seine, Argenteuil, painted by Claude Monet in 1873 shows the riverbank ablaze with the gold and rust of fall foliage, the trees and distant rooftops of Argenteuil mirrored in the still water beneath a hazy autumn sky. Painted the year before the first Impressionist exhibition, the canvas belongs to a series in which Monet studied the same tranquil bend of the Seine under shifting seasonal light, using broken, rapid brushstrokes to record the fleeting color of the season.
