Arrival of the Normandy Train, Gare Saint-Lazare, by Claude Monet depicts the glass-roofed platforms of one of Paris's busiest railway stations, where locomotive steam billows into shafts of hazy light above a crowded platform. Monet (French, 1840–1926), a founding figure of Impressionism, rented studio space near the station in 1877 and painted a series of canvases there, fascinated by the modern spectacle of steam, iron, and glass as a new kind of urban landscape.
