Painted in 1877, Claude Monet's Arrival of the Normandy Train, Gare Saint-Lazare belongs to his celebrated series of paintings of the Paris terminal that handled trains from the north and west of France. The Gare Saint-Lazare series — some twelve paintings of the steam, glass-and-iron architecture, and arriving locomotives — was exhibited at the third Impressionist exhibition of 1877 and is now recognised as one of the founding statements of modernist painting: Monet brought to the railway terminal the same observational rigour he had applied to the seacoast and the riverbank. A historically significant and atmospherically powerful work for any interior drawn to the canon of French Impressionism.
