Arrival of the Normandy Train, Gare Saint-Lazare, painted by Claude Monet in 1877 captures a steam locomotive pulling into the glass-and-iron train shed of the Gare Saint-Lazare, its smoke dissolving into shafts of light beneath the vaulted roof. Monet rented a studio near the station and obtained special permission to paint there, producing twelve canvases of the terminal that were shown together at the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877, a bold declaration that modern urban and industrial subjects belonged in serious painting.
