Argenteuil, the Seine, painted by Claude Monet in 1872 captures a becalmed stretch of the river at Argenteuil, with sailboats moored near the bank and their masts mirrored in the still water, houses lining the far shore beneath a pale sky. The picture dates from Monet’s first year in the riverside town, when the boating culture of Argenteuil became one of the defining subjects of his early Impressionist output.
