Aquarius, Piscis Australis & Ballon Aerostatique, c. 1824 by Sidney Hall depicts Aquarius pouring his eternal stream toward the mouth of Piscis Australis, framed by the now-obsolete constellation Ballon Aerostatique - a hot-air balloon added to honor the Montgolfier brothers' pioneering flight - with each star originally pierced through so the card could be held to a candle and read like the true night sky. The plate comes from Hall's celebrated Urania's Mirror series, and Sidney Hall (1788?–1831) was a British engraver and cartographer known for his lively, richly colored early 19th-century star atlases.
Artist: Sidney Hall (1788?–1831). Date: 1824.
