Anthropomorphic Vegetables, by Philip Mendoza depicts a garden patch of giant, human-faced carrots and root vegetables absorbed in reading, as a small boy climbs a signpost reading “Playthings Not Allowed Here.” British illustrator Philip Mendoza (1898–1973) painted this scene for the children's magazine Treasure, part of a series adapting Charles Kingsley's classic The Water-Babies.

Artist: Philip Mendoza (1898–1973). Date: circa 1960s–1970s (Treasure magazine).
