American Dipper (Water Ouzel) by John James Audubon

American Dipper (Water Ouzel), by John James Audubon Two dippers perch on rocks above a mountain stream, the water tumbling past in a cascade rendered with Audubon's characteristic attention to both anatomy and habitat. Audubon was an American ornithologist and painter whose Birds of America remains the definitive early record of the continent's avifauna, and this hand-colored plate, engraved by Robert Havell, was originally titled "Water Ouzel."

Artist: John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851).
