Albany, New York on the Hudson River, c. 1839 by William Henry Bartlett depicts the city of Albany rising above the Hudson River, its skyline anchored by the domed New York State Capitol and surrounding church spires, as a sailing sloop and a steam-powered river packet ply the water below. Bartlett was an English topographical illustrator (1809–1854) who traveled the United States gathering sketches for American Scenery; or, Land, Lake, and River, published by George Virtue in London in thirty monthly installments from 1837 to 1839.
