Across the Continent: “Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way” is an 1868 hand-colored lithograph published by Currier and Ives after a drawing by Frances Flora Bond Palmer, depicting a frontier settlement with a steam locomotive heading west past covered wagons and mounted Native Americans, with a river and mountains beyond. Currier and Ives was the leading American lithography firm of the 19th century, publishing thousands of popular prints that shaped the visual imagination of the era, and this scene remains one of its most celebrated depictions of westward expansion.
