A Bowl of Apples (Le Panier de Pommes), painted by Claude Monet in 1880 presents a woven wicker basket brimming with red apples, set on a wooden table beside a scatter of loose green apples spilling toward the viewer. Still life was a relatively uncommon subject for Monet, whose attention was largely devoted to landscape, but this warmly lit, closely observed arrangement, painted during a spell of poor weather in 1879 to 1880 when he turned to more easily sold indoor subjects, shows the same sensitivity to colour and light that defines his outdoor work.
