Grand Central Station Excavation, 1908, New York City This archival photograph documents the massive excavation for New York Central Station in Manhattan, showing steam shovels and construction cranes cutting a deep trench through the rail yard as the steel framework of the new terminal rises along the platform edge. Completed in 1913 after a decade of work prompted by a fatal 1902 tunnel collision, the project buried the tracks below street level and gave rise to the Grand Central Terminal that still anchors Midtown Manhattan today.
