Children’s Afternoon at Wargemont, c. 1884, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir depicts the Bérard sisters in a parlour at their family’s Normandy château: one girl reads on a blue-striped sofa in a gingham dress, while another in a sailor dress stands with a doll beside a seated older figure. Renoir, the French Impressionist (1841-1919) renowned for his luminous colour and sensitive portraits, paints the scene with crisp contours and a gleaming play of blue, cream and warm brown.
