View of Cagnes, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1900 captures a sweeping panorama of the medieval hilltop village of Cagnes-sur-Mer rising above silvery olive groves on the French Riviera. Rendered in warm ochre, terracotta, and dusty green tones, the loose, sun-warmed brushwork reflects the freedom Renoir found late in his career, when arthritis drew him to seek out warmer, gentler climates. The painting belongs to the group of Provençal landscapes Renoir produced after he began wintering in the south, in the years just before he settled permanently in Cagnes.
