Trees and Undergrowth, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887 captures the dense, dappled interior of a forest floor, its tangle of slender trunks and undergrowth rendered in short, comma-like strokes of green, gold, and violet that let patches of sunlight flicker across the canvas. Created during his two years in Paris, the painting reflects Van Gogh’s close study of Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist color theory as he moved away from the dark tonal palette of his Dutch period toward the brighter, broken brushwork that would define his mature style. It belongs to a small group of sous-bois, or forest-interior, paintings he made while exploring the parks and woods around the city.
