Three Cottages in Saintes-Maries, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, depicts a cluster of whitewashed, thatch-roofed cottages set against a deep blue Provençal sky, their lime-washed walls and a bright red door catching the strong southern light. Van Gogh painted this scene during his brief stay at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in June 1888, one of several studies he made of the fishing village’s simple, sun-bleached architecture. The work’s vivid blues, fresh greens, and warm ochres reflect the heightened color and confident brushwork he was developing at the outset of his prolific Arles period.

Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890). Date: 1888.
