Painted in early June 1888 during Van Gogh's brief stay on the Mediterranean coast, Three White Cottages in Saintes-Maries depicts a cluster of whitewashed cottages with steep roofs set against the bright southern sky. Van Gogh worked rapidly here, building the scene in vivid blues, fresh greens, and warm ochres, the lime-washed walls caught in the strong Provençal light he had traveled to the sea to find. The few days he spent at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer proved decisive for his Arles period, sharpening the heightened color and energetic brushwork of his mature style. The painting is held today at the Kunsthaus Zürich and stands as a luminous record of his encounter with the Camargue coast.
