The Yellow Books, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, presents an extravagant pile of some twenty French paperback novels, most bound in the bright yellow paper characteristic of the Charpentier publishing house, tumbled across a tabletop beside a glass holding a single rose. Painted while Van Gogh was living with his brother Theo in Paris, the work reflects his passionate reading of contemporary French literature, including Zola and the Goncourt brothers, and was among the very first of his paintings to be publicly exhibited, at the Societe des Artistes Independants in March 1888.
