The Vines at Cagnes, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1908, depicts a hillside view over Renoir's Cagnes-sur-Mer vineyard framed by gnarled, warm-toned tree trunks, a red-clad figure seated in the dappled shade as a small farmhouse and distant hills unfold beyond. Rendered in loose strokes of crimson, rose, and verdant green, the composition captures the sun-saturated brushwork of Renoir's late Provencal manner. Held today at the Brooklyn Museum under its French title Les Vignes a Cagnes, the painting reflects the artist's deep attachment to the Mediterranean vineyard views surrounding his final home.
