Painted in 1890 while Van Gogh was a patient at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, The Siesta (After Millet) is a free reinterpretation of Jean-François Millet's famous engraving of agricultural workers resting at midday, transformed by Van Gogh's extraordinary chromatic and expressive gifts into one of the most warmly human and luminously beautiful works of his entire career. The sleeping figures and their sun-drenched midday world are rendered in Van Gogh's characteristic swirling brushwork in glowing yellows, blues, and ochres.
