Painted in June 1888 following a brief but intensely productive visit to the Mediterranean fishing village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Vincent van Gogh's The Sea near Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer captures the shimmering expanse of the Mediterranean under brilliant southern skies, the small fishing boats and choppy waves rendered in his characteristic swirling, energetic brushwork and vivid blue-and-green palette. The work belongs to a group of seascapes from this visit that represent Van Gogh's first sustained encounter with the open sea, an experience he described in ecstatic terms in letters to his brother Theo. Now held in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, it is among the most luminous and joyful of his landscapes. A radiant and deeply atmospheric work for any interior that values the finest of Post-Impressionism.
