The Rocks, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, captures a rugged outcrop of stone at Montmajour, near Arles, crowned by a single dark pine and set within sun-baked Provencal scrubland, rendered in the intense palette and energetic, textured brushwork of his mature Post-Impressionist style. Van Gogh described in his letters the difficulty of painting the scene amid the relentless Provencal wind, which repeatedly threatened to blow the canvas away as he worked. The simplified, bold forms and vivid colouring reveal the continuing influence of Japanese woodblock prints on his mature vision.
