Painted in 1889 during his time at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Vincent van Gogh's The Ravine of the Peyroulets captures a wild, tumbling stream cutting through a rocky gorge in the Provençal landscape, rendered with the swirling, intensely expressive brushwork of his most creatively fertile period. The work is one of a group of ravine paintings from this time that demonstrate Van Gogh's extraordinary ability to invest a landscape with emotional urgency, the churning water and overhanging rocks rendered in a palette of deep blue, green, and ochre of remarkable chromatic intensity. Now held in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the painting is considered among the finest landscapes of his Saint-Rémy period.
