The Ravine of the Peyroulets, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, captures a wild, tumbling stream cutting through a rocky gorge near Saint-Remy-de-Provence, its bowl-shaped rocks worn smooth by centuries of rushing water and rendered in short, taut brushstrokes of blue, green, and ochre. Painted during his stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, the work belongs to a series of ravine paintings from this period that reveal Van Gogh's extraordinary ability to invest a landscape with emotional urgency, the churning water rendered, in his own words, white and foaming like soapsuds.
