Painted in 1881 during Renoir's Italian sojourn, Onions (Les Oignons) arranges a small cluster of bulbs and a head of garlic on a white napkin against a rich, warmly modulated ground. The composition unfolds in coppery rose, golden ochre, and creamy ivory tones, animated by the loose, sensual brushwork Renoir was refining as he absorbed the lessons of Italian masters. He painted this celebrated still life in Naples, where the southern light and Mediterranean produce drew him toward a fuller, more sculpted treatment of form. The work hangs today at the Clark Art Institute and stands as a luminous testament to one of the most beloved still lifes in the Impressionist canon.
