The Needle of Étretat, Low Tide (Aiguille d’Étretat, marée basse), painted by Claude Monet in 1883 captures the slender chalk spire of the Aiguille rising beside the arch of the Porte d’Aval on the Normandy coast. The receding tide lays bare a dark shelf of weed covered rock in the foreground, while calm silvery water and a soft blue sky bathe the sunlit cliff faces in pale gold. Monet painted this view during his 1883 campaign at Étretat, setting out to capture the shifting light of the Channel coast at a site made famous by Courbet before him.
