The receding tide lays bare a dark shelf of weed covered rock in the foreground, while calm silvery water and a soft blue sky bathe the sunlit cliff faces in pale gold. Monet painted this view during his 1883 campaign at Étretat, setting out to capture the shifting light of the Channel coast at a site made famous by Courbet before him.
