The Manneporte (La Manneporte, Étretat), painted by Claude Monet in 1883 captures the largest of the three natural rock arches on the Normandy coast as surf breaks against its base. Monet painted the scene from a vantage point reachable only at low tide, letting sunlight blaze across the pale limestone while cool blues and greens churn in the sea below. It belongs to the celebrated group of roughly twenty canvases he painted at Étretat in February 1883, works that point toward his later serial studies of a single motif.
