Painted in 1879, The Luncheon (Le Déjeuner) gathers a small group around a sunlit café table strewn with glassware and fruit, an intimate prelude to the great Luncheon of the Boating Party of two years later. The composition unfolds in warm cream, dusty rose, and soft umber tones, animated by the loose, sparkling brushwork that defined Renoir's late-1870s manner.
