Painted in 1879, The Luncheon (Le Déjeuner) gathers a small group around a sunlit café table strewn with glassware and fruit, an intimate prelude to the great Luncheon of the Boating Party of two years later. The composition unfolds in warm cream, dusty rose, and soft umber tones, animated by the loose, sparkling brushwork that defined Renoir's late-1870s manner. By this point Renoir had perfected his treatment of bourgeois leisure — cafés, terraces, and outdoor parties peopled by friends and elegantly dressed Parisians. The work stands as a luminous testament to one of the most beloved subjects in nineteenth-century French painting: the modern gathering at table.
