The Luncheon (Le Déjeuner), painted by Claude Monet around 1873 depicts a corner of the artist’s own garden at Argenteuil, where a white-clothed table still holds the silver coffee pot, bread and fruit of a just-finished summer meal. Monet’s young son Jean plays quietly in the shade beside the bench while a woman in a pale dress strolls past beds of red and white flowers toward the house. Later exhibited at the second Impressionist exhibition of 1876 as a decorative panel, this sunlit scene of family leisure now hangs in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
