The Little Branch of the Seine at Argenteuil (Le Petit Bras de la Seine à Argenteuil), painted by Claude Monet in 1872 shows the quiet backwater of the Seine that curls around the Île Marante, just downstream from the town where Monet had settled the previous winter. Beneath a vast silvery sky heavy with cloud, barges rest against the tree-lined bank at left while a small rowing boat and two white sails drift across the calm gray-green water. Painted in the first year of Monet’s celebrated Argenteuil period, it distills the gentle river light of the Île-de-France into soft greens, grays and creams.
