The Japanese Footbridge (Le Pont japonais), painted by Claude Monet in 1899 shows the graceful blue-green arch of the wooden bridge Monet built over the water-lily pond in his garden at Giverny. Rafts of pink and white lilies drift across the still water, which mirrors the dense curtain of willows and grasses that seals the scene in luminous green. One of the celebrated series of bridge views Monet painted that summer as a prelude to the great Water Lilies, this canvas now belongs to the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1899.
