Haystacks, End of Summer (Meules, fin de l’été), painted by Claude Monet in 1891 sets two golden grainstacks in a sunlit meadow at Giverny, their conical thatched tops glowing against a haze of blue green trees and distant farmhouses. Long violet shadows stretch across the stubble as the late summer morning light dissolves every contour into shimmering color. The canvas belongs to Monet’s celebrated Grainstacks series of 1890 to 1891, the first of his great serial campaigns, and now hangs in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
