The Green Wave (La Vague verte), painted by Claude Monet around 1866 pitches a small sailboat over the crest of a deep emerald swell, its gray sails taut against a leaden Channel sky. White foam breaks along the high horizon, where a steamship and a second sail dissolve into the mist. Painted in Monet’s mid twenties under the spell of Manet’s bold marine pictures, this daring seascape, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, compresses the sea into a towering wall of green that already points toward Impressionism.
