The Customs House, Pink Effect (La Maison du douanier, effet rose), painted by Claude Monet in 1897 shows the small stone coastguard cabin at Varengeville perched on its grassy clifftop above a calm, silvery sea, a lone sailboat drifting on the distant horizon. Monet first discovered this humble Napoleonic-era customs post in 1882 and returned to it obsessively in 1896 and 1897, painting the motif under shifting veils of colored light. Here the whole scene dissolves into tender rose, mauve and pearl-gray harmonies, an atmospheric unity that looks ahead to his great late series.
