Tiny sailboats drift far below, emphasizing the sublime scale of the cliffs Monet could only reach by a precarious path or by boat. Painted during one of his many autumn stays at Etretat between 1883 and 1886, the work is part of a series capturing the dramatic light and geology of this celebrated stretch of coastline.
