The Cliffs at Étretat (Falaises d’Étretat), painted by Claude Monet in 1886 shows the small local fishing boats of Étretat, their dark sails raised, gliding out past the Porte d’Aval arch and the slender Aiguille as evening gold settles over the Channel. Monet returned to the Normandy coast in the winter of 1886, completing the remarkable series of cliff paintings he had pursued at Étretat since 1883. With its luminous amber sky mirrored in lilac and violet swells, the canvas now hangs in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.
