The Cliffs at Étretat (Les Falaises à Étretat), painted by Claude Monet in 1885 looks along the shingle beach toward the soaring Aiguille needle and the arched Porte d’Aval, with small sailboats slipping across a calm blue Channel. Monet spent the autumn of 1885 at Étretat, one of several campaigns in which he painted these famous chalk formations from the beach and cliff paths in every weather. Crisp seaside light models the rock in silvery grays and warm tans against a soft blue sky, and the canvas now belongs to the Clark Art Institute in Massachusetts.
