The Church at Vétheuil (L’Église de Vétheuil), painted by Claude Monet in 1880 shows the medieval church of Notre-Dame rising above the white houses of the little Seine-side village, its image trembling in the river below where small boats hug the grassy bank. Monet lived at Vétheuil from 1878 to 1881, a difficult yet transformative period in which the village and its church became some of his most cherished motifs. Painted from across the water, the scene weaves fresh greens, chalky whites and soft blue-grays into a serene portrait of provincial France in summer light.
