The Grands Boulevards, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1875, captures the broad, tree-lined avenues of Haussmann's modernized Paris, alive with carriages, top-hatted strollers, and dappled afternoon light. Rendered in warm ivory, fresh green, and silvery blue with the rapid, broken brushwork Renoir refined in the wake of the first Impressionist exhibition, the canvas is now held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and ranks among his most celebrated views of Paris. Together with Monet, Caillebotte, and Pissarro, Renoir was among the first painters to treat the new boulevards as a worthy subject for fine art.

Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919). Date: 1875.
