The Artist’s Garden at Giverny (Le Jardin de l’artiste à Giverny), painted by Claude Monet in 1900, looks down a sun-dappled gravel path bordered by dense beds of violet irises, with the pink walls of Monet’s house glimpsed through blossoming trees. Monet designed and planted this garden himself after settling at Giverny in 1883, arranging flowers in broad bands of color like pigments on a palette. By 1900 the garden had become his open-air studio and chief subject, the living laboratory that would soon lead to the great water lily series.
